Temporary Protected Status (TPS)A designation that lets nationals of certain countries facing conflict or disaster stay and work in the United States temporarily.See it in the glossary for Lebanon runs through November 27, 2026, under a six-month extension in a Federal Register notice published May 29. The notice says the Secretary of Homeland Security intends to decide whether to extend or end the designation.
What the Lebanon TPS extension does
The Lebanon designation had been set to end May 27, 2026. The notice says no determination was made by the March 28 statutory deadline, so the designation was extended automatically “by operation of the TPS statute.” The Secretary chose a six-month period, from May 28 through November 27.
Work permits and re-registration for Lebanese TPS holders
EAD (Employment Authorization Document)A card issued by USCIS on Form I-765 that allows certain noncitizens to work legally while another application is pending or a status permits it.See it in the glossary in category A12 or C19 with a “Card Expires” date of May 27, 2026 are automatically extended through November 27, according to the notice. Holders do not need to take any action to keep them valid.
Re-registration is not required, and pending Forms I-821 and I-765 do not need to be refiled. People who want a new card showing the November 27 date may file Form I-765 and pay the fee or request a fee waiver.
Who is covered
Lebanese nationals who have lived continuously in the United States since October 16, 2024 and who meet the other requirements keep TPS under the extension. The notice also lists physical presence in the country since November 27, 2024. WTOP reported that the extension protects about 11,000 Lebanese nationals.
What DHS has said about the next decision
The notice says that no later than 60 days before November 27, “the Secretary intends to review the conditions in Lebanon and decide whether extension or termination is warranted.” That date fell on September 28. We have not found a later notice on Lebanon.
For how designations, terminations and work permits fit together, see our explainer on TPS updates. DHS said Ukrainian and Sudanese holders keep protection while decisions are pending, as covered in our report on Ukraine and Sudan TPS, and we reported the same for Salvadoran TPS holders. We will update this article when DHS publishes a decision on Lebanon.
