Overview: Standard post-completion OPT allows up to 90 aggregate days of unemployment before F-1 status is at risk. The STEM OPT extension does not add a separate 60-day allowance on top of that; it raises the total pool to 150 aggregate days across the entire OPT period, standard plus STEM combined, so unemployment days already used during standard OPT count against the 150-day ceiling rather than resetting.
How unemployment is tracked during standard OPT
The clock starts on the OPT start date shown on the EAD and counts every calendar day, including weekends and holidays, that the student does not have qualifying employment in their field of study. Days do not need to be consecutive; they accumulate across the entire 12-month post-completion OPT period.
The unemployment day limit during the STEM extension
A student approved for the 24-month STEM OPT extension is subject to a combined 150-day aggregate limit covering both the standard OPT period and the extension together, not a fresh 150-day allowance starting when the extension begins.
Why the STEM limit is cumulative across both periods
This is the detail most commonly misunderstood: a student who used 60 days of unemployment during standard OPT enters the STEM extension with 90 days remaining, not a new 150. DHS's own guidance describes the 150-day figure as including whatever unemployment was already used during the standard OPT period.
What counts as qualifying employment
During standard OPT, qualifying employment generally has to relate to the student's field of study. During the STEM extension, the position must also involve at least 20 hours per week with an E-Verify-enrolled employer and be covered by the required Form I-983 training plan; falling short of the 20-hour threshold can itself be treated as a form of unemployment.
Reporting obligations to the school
Students on OPT and STEM OPT are generally required to report employment changes and periods of unemployment to their school's designated school official within a set number of days, so the school's SEVIS record reflects an accurate, current unemployment count.
What happens when the limit is reached
Exceeding 90 days during standard OPT, or 150 aggregate days during the STEM extension, can result in SEVIS record termination and a loss of F-1 status, generally without an individualized warning beforehand.
Keeping a safety margin during a job search
Because the STEM 150-day figure is a shared pool rather than an additional allowance, a student who used a significant chunk of the 90 standard-OPT days before finding STEM-qualifying employment has meaningfully less runway during the extension than the headline "150 days" might suggest, and should track the actual remaining balance rather than assuming a full 150 days are available.
